Apple Launches iLife '11 with Updated Versions of iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand

overview_herobox_20101020.pngApple introduced iLife ’11 at yesterday’s “Back to the Mac” media event. This is the first major update for the iLife suite since early 2009 at MacWorld.

OK, here’s the rundown of the updates in each app:

iPhoto ’11: This update offers a full-screen mode, Facebook integration improvements such as posting directly to Facebook, and reading comments left on the photos directly in the app. You can also now email photos directly from the app. New slideshow effects, some of which use location information in geo-tagged photos.

The app also has a new project view that is reminiscent of iBooks, which contains all of the cards and photo books that a user might be working on at the time. The new app also offers new photo book and letterpress card creation features.

iMovie ’11: The new version of iMovie has a new People Finder feature, based on the same face recognition technology used in iPhoto, that can now find people in both close and wide shots of film. There are also new news and sports themes along with a new movie trailer template complete with music recorded by a full symphony.

GarageBand ’11: The new version of GarageBand has several new features one of which is called Groove Matching, which automatically matches the rhythm of different instruments with a certain song. Another feature called Flex Time, which allows users control over timing of specific notes or tracks in a song. There are a few new lessons included in this version, and a new “How did I play?” feature that provides visual feedback during practice sessions and keeps track of practice history and performances.

iWeb and (unsurprisingly) iDVD did not receive updates in this version of iLife. Nor did Apple update iWork productivity suite, which is an odd move.

Of course, iLife ’11 is preinstalled on all new Macs, and it can be purchased for $49 for iLife ’09 owners who wish to upgrade. Apple dropped the price by $20 from previous versions, and you can’t complain about that.

I’d also like to thank Killian Bell for his crack reporting on yesterday’s news. He really did a great job.
