After it was found that the new MacBook Air is not shipping with the Flash plugin preinstalled, Engadget is now reporting that Apple has officially responded to inquires, regarding if this was just a fluke, or just aimed at the MacBook Air, or if this was the company’s stance moving forward. It turns out it’s the latter. Apple will no longer be shipping their any of their machines with Adobe Flash preinstalled. It will be the user’s problem to install it, and Adobe’s problem to keep it up to date.
We’re happy to continue to support Flash on the Mac, and the best way for users to always have the most up to date and secure version is to download it directly from Adobe.
This sounds like the same rationale that Steve Jobs gave the other day regarding why Java would no longer come preinstalled on new Macs. That is to say, Apple can’t keep pace with the new versions of different technologies being issued by their respective developers. Instead, Apple is now handing that responsibility over to users and developers to keep their software up to date.
