Over the last few days, a story has emerged that Apple CEO Steve Jobs was pissed when he heard that Microsoft had acquired Bungie (the makers of Halo, who up to that point been solely Mac developers). However, a new report suggests that Jobs wasn’t just mad because Microsoft acquired a Mac developer, but because Apple was actively participating in negotiation to acquire the company themselves.
His account of the circumstances was that Phil Schiller – Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing – then had a meeting with Steve Jobs to discuss if the Macintosh manufacturer should proceed with acquiring Bungie.
“Schiller asked Steve, who said no,” Deniz tells Develop. “[But] after a week, Steve said yes. Schiller calls Bungie, but Bungie had already consummated the deal with Microsoft”.
So, it sounds like only within a weeks time Jobs dropped the ball and lost his opportunity. That said, who knows if Halo would have been as big of a sensation if it had premiered on the Mac. I say yes, and that could started the ball rolling for games on the Mac.
I even have video proof that Halo was headed to the Mac. You can see it here.
