Apple Releases Updates iPhoto to Address Photo Loss Issues

iphoto_icon.jpgApple released iPhoto 9.0.1 late last week to address the issues encountered by some early upgraders. Specifically, some users were losing some or all of their photo library after the upgrade from iPhoto ’09.

This update addresses issues that, in extremely rare cases, could result in data loss when upgrading a library from an earlier version of iPhoto.

Apple has also released a support document outlining the upgrading process which suggests that users should first install iPhoto ’11, then install the update from Software update, then the users can safely upgrade their iPhoto library when launching iPhoto ’11 (9.0.1) for the first time.

Before an existing iPhoto library can be used with iPhoto ’11 it must be upgraded. This process occurs when you open your library with iPhoto ’11 for the first time. In extremely rare cases, if you do not follow the recommendations below during the upgrade process you may experience data loss. This article outlines the various events that may occur during the library upgrade process and offers advice on how to avoid data loss.

Not to sound preachy, but you should always backup anything you find important, like your photo library, before upgrading any software. Trust me, I’ve lived through similar problems.
