OmniVision Providing Both Front and Rear Cameras for Next-Gen iPad?

Screen shot 2010-02-21 at 1.59.31 PM.pngBarron’s is reporting that a research firm Detweiler Fenton is claiming that OmniVision has been tapped to supply the image sensors to be used in both the front and rear facing cameras that will reportedly be included in the next-gen iPad. The report goes on to claim that the revamped iPad will appear in Q1 of 2011, likely late in the quarter.

The research firm contends the new iPad will ship with two cameras, a 5 MP camera and a VGA camera, and likely will support Apple’s FaceTime video chat software. Detweiler says their early read is that Apple will build 2.5 million units of the next iPad in calendar Q1, providing an incremental 5 million units of demand from Apple for OVTI, which also supplies sensors for the iPhone.

Of course, it’s a pretty safe bet to say that the next-generation iPad will have a front-facing FaceTime camera considering Apple has put FaceTime cameras in all of their mobile devices in the last year. However, a rear-facing camera is still a questionable addition.
