Skyfire Browser Hitting App Store This Week, Converts Flash Video to HTML 5

The Skyfire browser app for iPhone will hit the App Store this Thursday (11/4) at 9:00AM Eastern. Why is this interesting enough to care what day and time it launches? Because Skyfire makes it possible to view Flash videos in an iPhone browser.

No, Apple has not suddenly relented and allowed Flash onto the iPhone. Skyfire translates Flash video into HTML 5 format – and it’s been approved by Apple after a rigorous review. Flash games won’t work in Skyfire and Hulu has apparently blocked it, so its videos won’t be playable.

Skyfire has been a popular browser app on other mobile platforms for quite a while, and has seen more than 1.5 million downloads on Android devices. It is ‘built on top of’ Mobile Safari, so it includes all of Safari’s features as well as its own new ones.

Here are some of its other key features:

Vibrant Video
watch videos – even Flash! – on your favorite sites

Explore Related
find content related to the page you’re browsing

Social Sharing
social browsing with one-click share

User Agent Switching
load pages for either mobile or desktop

Private Browsing
keeps your browsing private, with no data trail

It feels a little surprising that Apple approved this app, and it sure will be interesting to see how well it works. Not long to wait to give it a try either. In the meantime, you can check out a video demo at the Skyfire site:
