CutYourSim Promises Permanent iPhone Unlock, with No Jailbreaking

CutYourSim is offering a new service that they claim will unlock any iPhone permanently, without any need to jailbreak.

It’s an “official iPhone unlock”, they explain, and will carry on forever. This lets you unlock your device for use with any carrier and update it to the latest iOS firmware and baseband without waiting for an unauthorized unlock to be released:

The unlock will work with any iPhone version, and any baseband version, no need to worry about updating to the latest version anymore.

The charge for this unlock method is $169 per device, the company claims the procedure used will not void your warranty, and the method used is said to be based on ‘whitelisting’ a device’s unique IMEI identification number in Apple’s own database.

I’ve never had need or desire to unlock any of my iPhones, so I haven’t followed unlocking news closely. I have a browse around this morning and seen that Dev Team member MuscleNerd has been fielding a number of questions about this service on Twitter – and he sounds little skeptical about this one I think:

Again, I’m not an expert (or anywhere close) on unlocking, but a method that costs $170 per iPhone and is based on unauthorized modifications to an IMEI database sounds awfully dubious to me. It doesn’t sound like the sort of thing that Apple will turn a blind eye to. I would imagine a very short lifespan for this service and perhaps for the company offering it.
