All Things Digital is giving a report that echos other recent reports that we’ve heard recently, specifically that the new iPhone will not be launched this summer as in years past, but will instead be launched this September, alongside at Apple’s usual (for music) annual event.
Here’s a quote:
As I’ve reported here before, Apple doesn’t plan to unveil a new iPhone at its Worldwide Developers Conference, which this year will be largely software-focused. And increasingly, I’m hearing speculation about the company possibly commandeering its annual September media event to launch the device instead. Which seems plausible.
The report goes on to say what I was already thinking. That is, the iPod line is running out of steam, and are very predictably refreshed each fall, with new features we all see coming. Moving the iPhone refresh to a annual fall refresh, would give new life to the event, and make WWDC once more about software, and not the hardware Apple is expected to announce. This would also allow Apple to move their iOS preview event to WWDC, giving WWDC more content, and give developers time to prep their apps for the OS ahead of a hardware launch in the fall.
In short, it seems that Apple is just moving their product announcements to later in the year.
