Speculation: Apple to Start Video Subscription Service Similar to Netflix

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek is speculating that Apple will launch a video subscription/streaming service similar to the one Netflix has. Specifically, Misek points to Apple’s new North Carolina Data Center as the technology powering this new service. Misek also points to Apple’s purported plans to double the size of the North Carolina data center in the future.

Apple is on the cusp of launching a “a new far reaching cloud-based service” focused on video, writes Jefferies analyst Peter Misek in a big report this morning.

Misek says Apple will use its new massive data center in North Carolina to offer an advanced web-based video subscription product that rivals Netflix.

To me, it seems that any recent Apple rumor can be answered with “the North Carolina Data center.” Apple’s preparing to launch a storage-less iPhone? The NC data center will handle that. New MobileMe? NC data Center. Apple’s preparing to include a free slice of cherry pie with each new iMac? The NC data center will take care of that.

Now, a more likely, albeit still remote possibility, is that Apple could buy Netflix. Apple is sitting on a huge pile of cash. Otherwise, Apple isn’t going to do such a thing. They don’t want to step on a partner’s toes, that arguably has made the second-generation Apple TV a hit with Netflix streaming integrated into the device.
