IDG News is reporting that Intel, this quarter, will be releasing developer kits for their new high speed I/O standard called Thunderbolt which was purportedly a joint development with Apple, and was fist introduced on the new MacBook Pros. A few peripheral companies also now have their hands on the standard specs, and are expected to soon begin launching products.
The report goes on to say that Sony is behind the standard, and HP is still evaluating the situation before committing resources.
Looking forward, I would assume that the majority of our file transfers will be handled wirelessly, either by bluetooth, or Wi-Fi or what have you, but when absolutely massive files have to be transferred quickly, wired connections, such as Thunderbolt, will always be faster. At least for the foreseeable future. I also believe Apple and Intel are positioning Thunderbolt to be the next USB. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be a smash hit. Remember FireWire? It had it’s place, but it never caught on like USB did.
