Apple Files Suit Against Samsung Regarding ‘Galaxy’ Tablet Line

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab_weekend.jpegThe Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple has filed suit against Samsung regarding their “Galaxy” line of smartphones and tablets, specifically for patent infringements.
Here’s an excerpt from the report:

The lawsuit, filed on April 15 in the Northern District of California, alleged that Samsung’s smartphones, such as the “Galaxy S 4G,” “Epic 4G,” “Nexus S” and its “Galaxy Tab” touchscreen tablet, violated Apple’s intellectual property.

“Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple’s technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products,” the lawsuit said.

Things get weird when you consider that Samsung is a huge provider of LCD displays, flash storage, A4 and A5 chips, and many other hardware parts that make up Apple’s different iOS devices.

At first this struck me as frivolous and a cheap attempt on Apple’s part to stop the competition, but when I discovered that Samsung supplies many of Apple’s components, it would then appear that Samsung really could be aping Apple’s designs, and using them on their own.

My question is this- Can Samsung cut Apple off of their products, or does Apple have them by the ball, in terms of demand? In short, could Samsung cut Apple’s supply of components in an attempt to hedge bets on their own Galaxy line and starve Apple’s production capabilities? I suppose it depends on what Samsung poses to make more money doing- building components for Apple, or using said components in their own products.

This will be fascinating to watch unfold.
