Apple Now the World’s Largest Handset Vendor By Revenue

As reported by All Things Digital today, Apple has become the world’s largest seller of mobile phones, when measured by revenue.

Another milestone for Apple. It became the world’s largest handset vendor by revenue in the first quarter of 2011, overtaking Nokia to claim that title. …

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, Apple’s wholesale revenues from the iPhone hit $11.9 billion for the quarter, exceeding those of Nokia, whose aggregated total revenues from smartphones, feature phones and basic phones combined was $9.4 billion.

Apple made more revenue than Nokia despite selling less than 20% as many handsets – with Nokia at 108.5 million and Apple at just 18.6 million. Nokia’s failure to ever really make a big impact in the smartphone market and move beyond dumb / feature phones is evident in those staggering numbers.

Amazing that iPhone has gone from zero (wasn’t even on the market yet) to top of the revenue charts in just four years.
