Apple Working on More Slender, Rackmountable Mac Pro?

Screen shot 2011-04-21 at 10.48.17 PM.png9to5Mac is reporting that Apple is “toying with” a Mac Pro redesign, which would have a more slender design- down from the current 8.1-inch wide design, to a new 5-inch wide design. The new Mac Pro would also be a few inches shorter, at a new height of 19-inches. Lastly, the new design would allow the Mac Pro to be rackmounted in sever cabinets as a 3U unit (whatever that means).

This doesn’t sound unreasonable to me. Apple earlier this year discontinued their Xserve line of server machines, while introducing a “server” configuration of the Mac Pro. That said, the Mac Pro hasn’t seen a substantial update in nearly a year, which isn’t something new, considering Apple has been neglecting the line, offering updates only once a year, for the past several years.

On the other hand, Apple is still giving indications that they are getting out of the sever business. First they discontinued the Xserves, because they weren’t selling, and as a stopgap offer sever configurations of both the Mac Pro and Mac mini. Then, it has been rumored that Apple will no longer be selling a Server version of Mac OS X starting with the release of Lion, but will instead offer those server tools (the software that sets the server edition apart from the regular client version) as an optional install on the Mac OS X install disc.

This will be an interesting rumor to watch.
