During Verizon’s earnings announcements the company revealed that the company, since it’s February release, has activated 2.2 Million CDMA iPhone 4s. The company also reported greater earnings over the year-ago quarter.

If you compare Verizon’s 2.2 million iPhones, to the 18.65 million iPhones Apple stated yesterday that they sold over the quarter (Verizon’s 2.2 million is included in that number), and then compare again to the 3.6 million iPhones AT&T activated (not to be confused with sold) and a picture begins to form. Let’s concede that AT&T actually sold all 3.6 million iPhones that quarter. Verizon, who didn’t even have a full quarter with the iPhone, sold almost 2/3 that number. That said, at least some of those 3.6 million iPhones were likely reactivations due to someone selling a unit to a friend, or what have you.

AT&T also reported that they had retained nearly the same number of customers from that quarter. This suggests one of two things. Either people are still trapped in their contracts with AT&T and aren’t leaving (or may be happy with their service), or more likely, the smartphone market is exploding so quickly that any AT&T defectors that left for AT&T were replaced by new customers.

I have absolutely no evidence to back any of this up. It’s purely speculation on my part, but something, to my mind at least, doesn’t seem to add up. How could Verizon sell 2.2 million iPhones, without AT&T taking a hit. Surely not all of those 2.2 million customer are new to the smartphone market.

At any rate, it goes without saying that the iPhone is a smash hit on both networks.
