The rumormill is going crazy with this one. With the latest Mac OS X Lion Preview that was released in March, some developers found that the bundled desktop images are now of super-high resolution- weighing in at 3200×2000. This of course, is a higher resolution than any of Apple’s currently shipping Mac displays.
Following that discovery, MacMagazine.com.br has found that icons in Mac OS Lion are now at 1024×1024, which is double the current maximum resolution of 512×512.
To me, this proves nothing. At least not yet. In fact, is says nothing more than that Apple is including high-resolution images in their builds. They’ve got their reasons I’m sure. The smartest piece I’ve read so far regarding the “Retina” display coming to the Mac, can be found here. In short, UI elements will either look small, or they’ll be doubled and do nothing to solve a problem that higher-resolutions screens are there to fix. The pixel math will simply have to match up, otherwise this is for nothing.
