Preview App Beefed Up in Mac OS X Lion, Will Serve as Viewer for MS Office Documents

Mac OS X Lion is due to be released this summer. The more I hear about it, the more fantastic it sounds. The new features in the OS itself sound superb, and even some of the ‘basic’ built-in apps appear to be getting significant upgrades.

The latest example is the humble Preview app. In Lion the app will serve as a viewer for Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files. Excel and Powerpoint files will open by default in Previewm, unless Office or iWork are installed on the Mac. Word files will open in TextEdit where they can be edited, but Preview will be an alternative viewer.

Preview is also getting some major new PDF support, including annotation tools and the ability to scan in signatures.

I don’t generally get excited at all about desktop OS upgrades – but I am very psyched up to see Lion.

Have any of you been trying out the Developer Preview of Lion? If so, please let us know what you think in the comments.
