Report Claims Sharp’s p-Si LCDs Coming to Sixth-Generation iPhone

iphone-4-low-signal.jpgAppleInsider is pointing to a report by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun that Apple has gone with Sharp to manufacture new poly-silicon displays for the sixth-generation iPhone (which would presumably be introduced in 2012). This poly-silicon, or p-Si technology allows for electronic components to be build right into the glass, and thus make for a thinner, lighter, display that uses less power.

The report gets weird however, and offers an apology for comments they made in a previous article, claiming that Sharp had been left out, and Apple had sided with Toshiba for future display component supplies. Sharp refuted this and asked for an apology. So, there’s that.

Now, what to make of the article. Could this be a controlled leak on the part of Sharp to squash any rumors that they’ve lost business with Apple, who would undoubtedly be one of their biggest customers? Who knows.

Apple is undoubtedly looking for ways to improve the displays in the iPhones. It is the primary input device for iOS devices after all. And, undoubtedly we’ll see technology like this make it’s way to the iPhone. But something about this report strikes me as sketchy. We’ll shelve this one until later.
