In a second piece by All Things Digital, which is working from the same telephone interview with Apple CEO Steve Jobs and SVP of Marketing Phil Schiller, and SVP iOS Scott Forstall, both Schiller and Jobs discuss the problems encountered in trying to bring the white iPhone 4 to market.
Here’s what Phil Schiller had to say about it:
“It’s not as simple as making something white. There’s a lot more that goes into both the material science of it – how it holds up over time… but also in how it all works with the sensors.”
So, the pain they were using wasn’t holding up over time, and was affecting how the light sensors work. At any rate, Schiller goes on to note that the company thought they had ironed out all of the problems prior to announcing the white iPhone’s availability. That obviously wasn’t that case.
Jobs then turned around and said that the company had learned a lot from the white iPhone debacle, and was able to apply it to other products. Note: the white iPad 2.
Anyway, you can get your hands on a white iPhone 4 starting tomorrow. Only ten months after the fact.
