As if there was any doubt remaining, MacRumors is reporting on the findings of one of their readers. The reader had contacted AT&T, and was told by a sales representative that Apple has officially told the company that there will be no new iPhone introduced this year, in the usual June or July timeframe.
The reason any of this was brought to light, was due to the reader’s subsidized upgrade eligibility date had been pushed back by five months. He then asked why, and this is the response he got:
Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future. Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us.
As MacRumors points out, this would normally be sketchy information at best, seeing as how low-level employees wouldn’t have this kind of information. That said, the manner in which this information was conveyed suggests that this might be company-issued answer.
To me, this confirms what we already knew. Apple is moving (I think purposefully, other believe there was a hiccup in manufacturing) the iPhone launch to the fall, to give new life to the annual iPod-media event.
