As you know, Apple released it’s much anticipated iMac update yesterday, bringing quad-core processors, and Thunderbolt to the entire line. In no time, iFixit did what they do best and torn down a 21.5-inch model, and made a few discoveries.
First, the GPU is now removable, kind of. In the new model, the Graphics card is not attached but it’s own board. Now you can swap out the GPU without having to replace the entire logic board. That said, it’s still not technically a user-accessible feature.
Next they found that the secondary SSD bay, which wasn’t present in the 21.5-inch model before, is located under the optical drive. Formerly, only the 27-inch model had enough room to accommodate a secondary SSD drive. Obviously Apple did some re-jiggering of the internals to make room.

Also worth noting, are the benchmarks found by Macworld. In short, they found the new 3.1GHz iMac to be 10% than the current high-end 15-inch MacBook Pro, but 15% slower than the built-to-order six-core Mac Pro currently being offered.
Sounds like a solid machine.
