
RCR Wireless claims that the next-generation iPad will have 3D technology baked into the display. Their sources include a “Hollywood insider” and sources within Apple’s manufacturing partner, Foxconn.
Take this report with a grain of salt the size of your head. That said, a few Apple patent applications and rumors have surfaced in the past that indicate Apple is indeed looking into this technology. However, it seems that the company is more interested in a head-tracking technology (a proof of concept video recently surfaced in fact) to achieve the illusion of 3D.
I can’t see Apple doing this, at least not right now. To me, 3D seems like a fad technology, much like it was in the 1950’s with 3D movies, which were attempting to compete with new TV technology. That, as I believe it is now, was a flash in the pan. I have no doubt Apple could do it, I just don’t know if they will.
