Design mind has an interesting little post up about admiring gadgetry that has been “aged to perfection”. The iPhone 2G in the picture above was kept in the same pocket as a set of keys for over three years and was only recently taken off the line of duty because its touchscreen finally gave up the ghost.
I will admit that this particular 2G does have a rugged exterior that actually does look quite cool, but I would have also liked to see another picture of the screen and what three years of keys did to it. I know that Apple’s glass is quite scratch resistant, but quite frankly, keeping an iPhone in the same compartment as a set of keys doesn’t sound like a manly thing to do, it sounds like a silly thing to do (and no, those are not always one and the same).
There is definitely a lesson to be learned about appreciating gadgetry long after its lustre has worn off, but keyrings and iPhones in the same pocket don’t constitute regular wear and tear to me.
That could just be the über geek in me reacting to the scarred iPhone, though.
