It does work as a video remote. 🙂 I’m really pleased about that.

So here’s what I did for those who might not have read the above post:

1. As my iPad is the device that I wanted to play media from, I synced it to my PC first, then in iTunes clicked on the iPad, clicked ‘Apps’ and scrolled down to ‘File Sharing’ and selected Tunes Remote.
2. Clicked ‘Add’ and selected the movie (which was in .mov format so that it could be played on the iPad). Once this was selected it automatically synced up – but just to be certain I pressed sync anyway (no harm eh!).
3. I then connected my iPad to the TV using Apple’s Composite AV Cable and started the Tunes Remote app, choosing the ‘Tunes’ function.
4. Tapping on the ‘Playlists’ button I found the video under ‘Movies’ and began playback.
5. Opening the Tunes Remote app on my iPhone I then chose the ‘Remote’ function and selected to control my iPad. I was then rockin’ and rollin’.

This is a great app and the only one I have round so far that can remotely control videos, which, for me, makes it well worth the money. The user interface is wonderful – almost identical to the iPod app UI so you really understand how it works from the moment you start using it.

Aside from the set back of Apple’s API not supporting remote controlling of videos already on the iDevice (WHY?!) meaning that it’s a bit of a mission to get around to playing videos through Tunes Remote, the only other drawback that I found was that there was no chance of continuing to play the video with the smart cover closed on the iPad as it has effectively put the iPad to sleep.

Through playing videos with the iPad’s native Video player, I have got used to closing the smart cover and still being able to watch the video on the TV which is nice as I then get no glare from the iPad screen when it has been set down beside the TV – now I’ll need to set the iPad down somewhere else, but I’m sure this can be fixed with an update as well.

So all in all, this app is worth the money and is really cool – I can see myself using it a lot more often for video playback and control, and I can imagine it will only get better with updates.

Fingers crossed Apple will allow for control of native videos in future as well, as it’s a lot of effort and preparation to sort out a video to control in the current state. Besides, what about controlling videos through the YouTube app too?! Our evolution is stunted for the time being! 😛

They assured me that it remotely control videos but you kind of need to go around the houses a bit to do so, as the Apple API doesn’t allow for any video remote controlling just yet (which is surprising).
The way to control videos is to connect the iDevice that you wish to play videos from (in my case, the iPad which will be connected to the TV) to your computer using the USB cable, and then in iTunes -> select your device -> select Apps -> scroll to File Sharing -> select Tunes Remote -> and then press the ‘add’ button to add the videos that you wish to remotely control.

This is exactly how they described this process to me in their email this morning. I haven’t got round to testing it out just yet, but when I do I will tell you if it works. I hope it does as I have now bought both iPhone and iPad apps in order to do this – my hard earned £2 better not be for nothing 😛

I looked for it after you mentioned it, but I can’t find any way to play the videos on my iPad through Tunes Remote.

I was just checking this app out – does it definitely act as a video remote then?
This is my big issue as it’s pretty much the only app out there that acts as an iPad / iPhone remote, but their website bangs on about music so much, I want something to control my movies while iPad’s hooked upto the TV. If this is the case then it’s so worth the two payments. My desperation warrants it =)

A statistics drawn by the Yankee Group shows that by the year 2013 Americans only are going to buy mobile applications worth $4.2 billion.
