Marco Arment on Laptop Power and Portability

 

Marco Arment has posted a few of his thoughts on how to pick a laptop based on size, weight, and power. In his post, Arment suggests focusing less on “what if” scenarios when considering a laptop purchase, and focusing more on what you’ll actually be doing in the day-to-day. However, this isn’t just another rant about how we should all go lighter rather than faster. Arment takes the time to point out that there is a balance, and that even heavier duty 15″ MacBook Pros are still relatively portable by notebook standards.

My own laptop — which, ironically, is almost never on my lap — is a 13″ MacBook Pro from 2009 and it has served me very well over the past two years. It can’t do 1080p and it can sometimes struggle with 720p videos in iMovie, but for most everything else I throw at it, it’s solid. I’m not sure what kind of computer I’ll look for in the next two years, but I know from this first MacBook purchase that the 13″ form factor is fantastic for my purposes. It packs just enough screen real estate for me to enjoy movies and writing and is still a few pounds lighter than the 15″ version (which helps a lot, since I use a messenger bag).
