Fortune is reporting that Verizon, who was already the number one carrier in the U.S., gained some 3.4 million subscribers last quarter, largely thanks to the introduction of the iPhone 4 on that carrier earlier this year.

The report points to Piper Jaffray’s Christopher Larson , claims that 38% of new cellular subscription went to Verizon, keeping them 11 points ahead of AT&T. But, things could have reportedly been worse for AT&T, seeing as they only lost the same number of subscribers as T-Mobile, and Sprint. The difference being that AT&T is larger, and they can afford to lose more customers.

In short, the image I thought we would have seen by now, is beginning to emerge. Verizon, thanks to the iPhone 4 introduction, is picking up momentum on AT&T, who had a three year lead. Remember, this report claims that Verizon signed up 3.4 million new customers, while the company just recently announced at their earnings call that they had sold 2.2 million iPhone 4s. In other words, the majority of Verizon’s new customers are there because of the iPhone.
