Apple Trends Upwards, While Rest of Smartphone Market Takes Slight Dip

Digitimes is reporting on the findings of IHS iSuppli and in the first quarter of 2011, Apple saw double-digit growth in the smartphone market. Apple, who is still ranked the the #2 spot, shipped 18.6 million iPhones in Q1 2011. That is up nearly 15% from the previous quarter. This was the fastest growth amongst the ranked top five. The next best in growth was #5 HTC, with 6.2%.

Motorola took a huge hit with 16.3% decrease in shipments, but still holding in the #1 slot with a total of 21.5 million units shipped in Q1 2011. Oddly, RIM did well, and sow shipments increase 4.2% in Q1, as the company is seeking markets outside of North America. Even with RIM’s growth, they aren’t growing fast enough to stay their ground, and lost market share to Apple.

Overall however, the market took its first slight dip since the beginning of 2009. IHS does not believe this will be a continuing downward trend, but rather reflects an effort to control inventory.
