NPD Group has released (via CNET) a new study that suggest that the recent decline in PC shipments is now due to the iPad’s success. The report notes that only 14% of early adopters (people who bought an iPad more than six months ago) bought the device instead of a PC. For the Holiday quarter that number was even lower, at just 12%.
This goes against conventional wisdom, as other reports surfaced noticing a drop in PC sales, around the same time of the introduction of the iPad. This appears to be coincidence, because 75% of iPad owners reportedly never had any intention of buying anything but the iPad. This means there is billions of dollars in new growth in the market, and not cannibalization.
So, the iPad isn’t cutting into the PC market as we thought before, but is still selling hotcakes. To Apple it doesn’t matter. As long as their products sell, they don’t care what they market trend is.
