Twitter – the official Twitter client for Mac (and formerly Tweetie for Mac) – has been updated, to Version 2.1.
This update sports some major changes for Twitter on the Mac. Probably the most biggest one is that it now support multi-window views. This allows you, for instance, to show the timelines for multiple accounts at once, or to show the timeline, mentions, and direct message views for one account all at once. So not a million miles away from Tweetdeck’s columns you might say – though with Twitter’s windows you can choose to have just the one as we had before, or to fire up some new ones to see more information at once.
Some other notable changes in the 2.1 update include:
— The annoying-as-hell bug where Twitter followed you through all your spaces (which yes there were workarounds for, but it came back after every Mac restart) has been fixed. Yay.
— In the Compose box it now does auto-complete on usernames and hashtags – quite a slick little addition.
— There’s now a chat bubble style look to direct message conversation panes.
— You can now set the font size in Preferences.
— It’s said to have a more Mac-like feel overall.
Oh, and it may allow you to pull to refresh the timeline (such an awesome iOS feature that was first used in Tweetie for the iPhone) if you purchased it via Macheist and know how to unlock secret features. I didn’t buy through Macheist so I haven’t tried this out.
I can say that after using the updated version for a while this morning, it does feel quite a bit quicker, snappier in pretty much every area of using it. This was already my long-time favorite Twitter app on the desktop. This update looks quite good to me so far, and that’s very good news because I use the app a lot every day.
