I’ve only spent a few days with the back panel of my Cable Cranes Gelaskin installed but my iPad habits have already changed.
While I still take precaution and try to hold the iPad steadily to avoid drops, the Gelaskins have brought me peace of mind with regards to scratches. I now feel confident laying the iPad down on most any surface, since the vinyl exterior is tough enough to resist most scratches and shiny enough to hide most micro scratches. The Gelaskin also stretches far enough onto the sides that using the iPad 2 in landscape mode (propped up by the Smart Cover) keeps any part of the aluminum backing from touching the table. Only the corners of the iPad stay exposed, but I actually prefer things that way, since trying to get corners to stick is always a fantastic pain in the ass.
The only complaint I have about the current set of iPad 2 Gelaskins is that they’re sold as more expensive $30 front/back sets. I’m not sure if I want to use cover the front panel of my iPad just yet because 1) it could be a little distracting having bright white instead of a black border and 2) I’m not sure I want any stickers around the corners of the screen to catch all sorts of dust. However, despite the fact I would rather have ordered just a back skin, I’m still very satisfied with my Gelaskin purchase.
I had considered picking up something from BodyGuardz or InvisibleShield for basic, lightweight scratch protection, but didn’t want anything that would show discolouration over time (the corners on all of my “invisible” skin installs have turned yellow or black). I also know that ZAGG (makers of InvisibleShield) feature their own set of vinyl ZAGGskins, but I found most of their designs downright tacky.
So when it came down to it, Gelaskins was the only company for me to choose from. They have a wealth of gorgeous artwork to choose from, they’re durable and re-applicable thanks to the vinyl and 3M adhesive design, and the cut-outs for buttons, ports, and speakers fit my iPad 2 to a tee. I’m still very happy with the Cable Cranes design I’ve picked, but should I ever want to buy another vinyl skin, I’ll almost certainly be heading back to Gelaskins.
