Death Rally (normally $2.99, currently $0.99) looks to be exactly what I was looking for this weekend. It’s a lighthearted six-car rally racer with heavy duty weaponry, which gives me two ways to get into pole position: through actual racing or by punching bullet-shaped holes into enemy cars until they’re nothing more than smoking slag.

Intense Storytelling

There is a back story to this crazy racing game, and here it is: you’re an outlaw who is being forced to participate in Death Rally to lure a bigger, badder outlaw into the open. Since you’re a relatively small fish, you’ll start out with a crappy car and nothing more than an automatic (read: weak-ass) machine gun mounted to your side. It is possible to kill with this weapon, but it’s so slow and requires such precision that you’re actually better off racing (hah!).

I thought that was crap, so I spent the first few races collecting all the pick-ups on the battlefield in the hopes of forming a new weapon or car. It didn’t even seem to matter what position I was in, since ending in fifth place still netted me a couple of bucks to upgrade my car, and let me keep all of the weapon and car fragments I had picked up along the way.

Shooting, Upgrading, Shooting…

Now that I have a few races and upgrades under my belt, the whole experience started to feel much more rewarding. My stock car was a lot faster, handled a lot better, and my side-mounted shotgun worked beautifully in tandem with the default pew-pew-pew machine gun. an aerial dogfight than a rally race, but I’m totally fine with that. In fact, as a big Twisted Metal fan, this is exactly what I wanted from Death Rally.

There looks to be enough vehicular gore to keep me satisfied for another few hours, at least. There are another five vehicles and seven more weapons to unlock and the satisfying. RPG-esque tally of dollars (experience points) at the close of every race. I also like how Moutain Sheep managed to leverage Game Center and create an unofficial “saved game” in the cloud based on the number of achievements you’ve unlocked.

As a quick adrenaline-filled purchase for the iPhone and iPad, I give Death Rally five thumbs up

Disclaimer: Extra thumbs may have been taken from losers who didn’t quite finish in order to grant this game its high appendage-based score.
