
BusinessInsider is reporting that Bernstein, a research firm, is claiming that the next-generation iPhone will now have a Near-Field Communication chip in it, as had been previously reported.
Leading up to today, we had heard several rumors claiming that Apple was brining NFC technology to the iPhone (and some claiming otherwise), to be used as a sort of “e-wallet” where customers could wave their iPhone over NFC credit card readers, and a charge would be made to their account. However, this no longer seems the case, at least not for the upcoming generation of iPhone.
At the expense of sounding like a know-it-all, I never expected NFC to make it way to the iPhone, at least not yet. The reason being infrastructure. There aren’t enough terminals in place to read NFC devices. Sure, Apple could roll it out and hope vendors followed suit, but that’s pretty big gamble. I think Apple’s waiting, not for technical reasons, but for their to be a significant infrastructure in place before introducing the technology.
