Oberon Design iPad Cases Are Bound to be Gorgeous

This set of iPad and iPad 2 cases from Oberon were the subject of Andy Ihnatko’s tweets this past weekend, so I took a peek at their website a little earlier this morning. At $130, these covers definitely don’t come cheap, but the craftsmanship behind these Oberon cases reminds me a lot of DODOcase or Sena products — well-made and built to last.

Oberon cases protect the iPad with thick bull leather, seals with a strong elastic, and keep the iPad in place with four separate straps. All in all, it’s a great vintage look, much like the one that TwelveSouth’s BookBook offers.

I probably wouldn’t bite the bullet and pick one of these up for myself, though, especially since the stand functionality seems a little questionable. You can fold the cover back and hold it in place with a cord for portrait and landscape stands, but the landscape typing mode just looks too iffy to me (and that’s the orientation I use the most). Oberon requires you to bend the cover all the wa back and simply let the tension of the case cover pull the whole iPad up a bit. In the demo video, this looks unstable for typing and un-even, which happen to be two things I’m very particular about.

However, these cases still look like the best way to turn your hi-tech iPad into an old-fashioned tome of freaking knowledge, so if you’re interested, head on over to the Oberon Design website to check out all of their designs. They’re all in dark colours, but you’re probably fine with that if you find the word “tome” exciting (kinda guilty of that myself).
