
Reuters is reporting that Apple has proposed a new SIM card standard to the European telecoms standards body (ETSI) that would make the design even smaller than the current micro-SIM standard, which is used in the iPhone and iPad lines. French carrier Orange seems to be onboard with the design, and such a new design would allow for the creation of smaller and thinner devices.
These new smaller SIM cards could be used as early as next year, and seem to be a stopgap measure in Apple’s plan to utilize embedded SIM cards in their devices. That is, Apple was reportedly looking into creating devices with embedded SIM cards, with the blessing of a handful of carriers and the GSM Association. Other carriers seemingly didn’t like that idea, and Apple backed down. A new, smaller SIM card would allow Apple to get closer to that goal, with some of the same benefits.
