FCC and FTC Ask Apple to Attend Forum

maps.pngThe Los Angeles Times is reporting that Apple (and Google) has been asked to attend a forum hosted by the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission. This forum will hopefully help agency staffers produce a report on location-based services, which in turn would be used to recommend regulations to the FCC. Topics for this forum will include: “how location-based services work, their benefits and risks, and information parents should know about location tracking of children using mobile devices.”

This forum will be the third time Apple has been called to testify on the matter of location privacy, all of which have taken place within a two week timespan.

As you well know by now, all of this blew open last month when it was discovered that iOS (and Android) cache recent Wi-Fi and 3G network location, to speed performance when connecting to them again in the future. This is only vague location data, and a bug was discovered wherein that cache was being retained longer than it should have. Apple has since addressed this bug in an update.

Also, Apple, Google, and others have been invited to yet another hearing next month. So there’s that.
