PhotoForge 2 for iPhone Is Out ($0.99 Today Only)

PhotoForge 2 is out and currently on sale for $0.99 (normally $4.99) so that owners of the previous version can benefit from a nearly-free upgrade. The app is currently only available on the iPhone, but developer GhostBird has confirmed that the app will be universal, and that an iPad version is “coming soon”.

PhotoForge was, by far, one of my favourite photo editors on the iPhone and iPad because of its power and ease of use, and its successor looks to be even more powerful. I’m also duly impressed with the speed of the app on my iPhone 3GS, and can’t wait to see how it performs on the iPad 2.

PhotoForge 2 processes full-size images (instead of using an image preview), allows you to manipulate image layers, and has a much faster and more professional UI that responds better to touch. This isn’t just one of those apps to quickly apply a filter to your photo: it really is a full-fledges mobile photo editor.

But not everything is totally rosy here. While the UI refresh does look incredible and offer a lot more power in most areas, some of my favourite PhotoForge tasks are now a little more complicated than they were in version one. One example is the current lack of paintbrush and eraser tools, which I loved to use for selectively erasing effects on my photos. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be able to achieve the same effect in PhotoForge 2, but playing with extra layers and masks seems a little more complicated than simply using an eraser. Perhaps needlessly so.

I’ll need a little more time to tell whether PhotoForge 2’s re-vamped UI will prove to be too complex for my modest mobile editing needs, but in the mean time, you might want to pick the app up while it’s still just $0.99. The sale should last for the rest of today (May the 19th).
