DigiTimes is reporting that Apple will be using “curved cover glass” for the next-generation iPhone, with Apple having purchased some 200-300 glass cutting machines.
This report spurs a multitude of questions. What kind of curved glass with the new iPhone use? Curved as in the 5th-generation iPod nano, or curved as in “concave” like the glass used in Nexus S. Why do this? But most importantly, will this be seen in the next-generation iPhone, or the one after that? See, it’s been widely reported for some time that the next-generation iPhone, expected to be introduced at this September’s media event, will have much the same form-factor as the current iPhone 4.
The reasoning behind the curved glass in the Nexus S, was for user comfort, when pressing the device to their face to make a call. Arguably this would also be a nice feature for iPhones to have as well. However, is it enough of an issue for Apple to change the design of a significant component? As time has shown, Apple doesn’t believe any detail is too small. But curved glass, really?
