There’s an App for That. That catchy line from Apple’s iPhone ads that highlighted some of the great apps available for it has become more and more true as the years have gone by. There’s an iOS app for just about everything these days, from the sublime to the ridiculous and everything in between.
According to the very clever folks at 148apps.biz and Chomp, the App Store (or should that be THE App Store?) has now had 500,000 apps approved and is closing in on 400,000 apps live in the store. To kick off a series of celebrations around the 500,000 apps milestone they’ve produced a superb infographic that offers up some of the incredible numbers and data points of the App Store and some great reminders of some of the store’s history.
Here are just a few of the things that caught my eye while browsing through the infographic:
— The headline numbers in the snapshot of the App Store today shown above: over 85,000 unique developers, 37% of all apps are free, $3.64 is the average price for paid apps, the two most popular categories are games and books.
— It seems hard to believe now, but back on July 10 of 2008 when the App Store launched, there were just 500 apps in it.
— By July 14, just four days after opening, there had already been 10 million app downloads.
— And by November of 08, just four months after the App Store launch, the number of apps available was up to 10,000.
— Apple’s own Texas Hold ‘em game has not been updated in over two and half years.
— In 2010 ‘app’ was named as Word of the Year by the American Dialect Society.
— In June of 2010, still less than two years old, the App Store hit the 5 billion (BILLION!) downloads mark.
— By January of 2011, the 10 billion downloads mark was reached.
— As a quick point of comparison, the Android Marketplace (launched just 8 months after the App Store) has around 294,000 apps and 3 billion app downloads.
Sometimes when I hear the latest crazy, huge App Store numbers I start to feel numb to all of them – the numbers are just so big now that it’s hard to get my head around them. But looking at this infographic is a great reminder of the incredible phenomenon that the App Store is. It was the kickstarter for the amazing rise of mobile apps, which is showing no signs of letting up anytime soon.
Hundreds of thousands of apps, tens of thousands of developers, billions of app downloads – and it all started with 500 apps less than three years ago!
Another thing I really enjoy about the infographic is that it shows lots of notable apps placed on the timeline at the points at which they launched or hit milestones of their own. Here’s the separate graphic showing the most popular paid apps ever, based on the number of days spent at #1 in the App Store:
Angry Birds has a huge lead over the number 2 app – 275 days to 38 days.
One more thing that may interest you – just in case you were ever thinking about grabbing every available app on a boring rainy weekend:
It would cost $891,982.24 and over 7 terabytes to download all
available applications.
The whole infographic is well worth a look and a browse through. Check it out at the 500k Apps Facebook page, here:
