The Korea Herald is reporting that Apple CEO Tim Cook visited South Korea to meet with Samsung executives to secure active-matrix organic light-emitting diode displays to be used in the next-generation iPad, which according to this report, could launch as early as the end of this year.
Apple reportedly offered Samsung an advance to secure the screens, which compared to the current IPS LCD screens used in the iPad and iPad 2, are more energy efficient, brighter, and reflect less sunlight. The report also notes that this could be trouble for LG, who is currently the main supplier of screens for Apple, but after recent light leakage issues, Apple has already shifted over to Samsung to supply the LCD screens.
This is one of those rumors that just won’t go away until it finally happens. Even before the original iPad launched, there were rumors that AMOLED screens would be used in the product. Since the launch, there have been an increasing number of claims suggesting Apple will make the shift in the next-generation iPad.
I can see this happening, but as of now, the main thing I see standing in Apple’s way, is their relationship with Samsung. They are suing the company after all. Perhaps that doesn’t matter when millions of dollars are at stake.
