iMapWeather Radio (v1.1)
Picked by: Jay
In the wake of the devastation by the tornado in neighboring Joplin, Missouri, my pick this week is iMap Weather Radio. I was coincidentally driving through that area just an hour after the tornado hit but was unaware of the severity of what had occurred. As I travel more, this brought to mind that I should consider having a weather app that knows where I am – instead of the usual zip code of my home (sorry WeatherBug).
iMap Weather Radio monitors your location and up to 5 “favorite” locations to not only display the usual real-time radar loop on a map, it also lets you toggle alerts of weather phenomena you’re interested in like severe weather, flood, winter, fire, etc. The alert is familiar head-turning screech sounded by NOAA.
More Precise Alerts: iMapWeather Radio provides more precise alerts than those offered by the typical consumer alerting service. Most alerting services will alert you to severe weather if you are in a county only partially covered by a watch/warning, even if you are not actually directly in the watch/warning. With iMapWeather Radio you only get an alert if your device or saved locations fall inside a watch/warning box. That means you are not disturbed by false alarms.
You may think it overreacting, but living with the possibility severe weather is commonplace in Missouri and I’m willing to pay for being more prepared.
AND YES, it works since it just went off (right after the television did) alerting a severe thunderstorm is in the area as I write this.

Modern Combat: Domination (v1.0.1)
Picked by: Alex Jordan
Description: Just as I noted last week, I don’t have much time for gaming these days, but when I do sit down, I want to play something that I can pick up and put down quickly. Modern Combat Domination, fits that description nicely. It is a first person shooter, mainly focused on online play. There are five maps, and multiple match types, such as the classic deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture he flag, and more. It’s not to say that the game doesn’t have it’s problem. The AI isn’t the sharpest, there aren’t a huge number of online gamers playing it yet, and the the number of maps are limited. It’s essentially a knockoff of CounterStrike: Source, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. At any rate, it looks good, it plays good, and at $12.99, the price can’t be beat.

Google Search for iPad (v0.8.2.6553)
Picked by: Thomas ![]()
My pick of the week is the Google Search app for iPad. It’s incredibly useful because it recognizes voice commands and is also smart to recognize frequently searched brands. There is the occasional time that it will confuse “Kobo reader” with “Coco reader”, but most of the time I’m actually surprised how accurate the voice recognition is.
I never quite got the point of this app when on the iPhone, but it makes a lot more sense on the iPad when I don’t have a stable surface to write on. In fact, it has recently become my go-to app for surfing while away from a desk.
Google Search still lacks native Instapaper support (and will probably never get it), but I’ve managed to work around this by simply using the “Share via Email” function to mail links to my personal Instapaper account.
