I buckled and finally installed the front of my Cable Cranes iPad 2 GelaSkin last night, which is something I thought I’d never get around to when I posted my initial review. I’m hoping that this front skin will help to solve two minor problems I’ve been having with the iPad. The first is the set of  lines that the Smart Cover tends to leave behind on the screen, and the second is the way iBooks will sometimes go crazy and turn five pages ahead simply because my thumb slips (ever so slightly) onto the screen. The front GelaSkin should provide enough of a raised surface to alleviate both these issues, but I’ll need a bit more time to really test this out.
Having the front skin there is definitely a little more distracting: it’s a very visible design on the front of my once glossy black iPad. However, I’m hoping that I’ll adjust to the whole thing after a few days and will tend to see it as part of the background.
For enquiring minds, this installation took about five minutes to complete, and I highly recommend keeping the non-stick pad that you peel the GelaSkin off of. It makes for a great way to ease yourself into the install, instead of slapping the whole skin on like a giant sticker.
Looking back, the Home button is still off by a little, though not enough to bug me. This is probably a slight manufacturer error or due to a stretching of the skin, because most everything else is perfectly aligned as far as my four eyes can tell. The edges of the skin are just a little rough, but I’m also assuming that they will wear themselves out after a bit of time.
I’ve ended two paragraphs with the same kind of wishy washy “oh, well maybe I’ll get used to it” statements, but I am pleased with the front and back GelaSkins coverage so far. As distracting as the design may be, it’s also interesting to have something framing the iPad screen, and as long as it doesn’t get in the way of any of my normal operations, I’ll probably be using this skin for a while.
