Apple has announced today that their iWork suite for iOS – the excellent Keynote, Numbers, and Pages apps – are now universal apps, designed to run on the iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod Touch.

These apps were originally created for the Mac and have been available as iPad apps ever since the iPad was released last year. They have always been priced at $9.99 each and they remain at that price now, so you can buy once and use them on both the iPhone or the iPad. Or if you’re an existing iPad user of any of them, the upgrade to the universal version (Version 1.4, released today) is free. This in itself is a nice move by Apple, as all three apps have consistently been amongst the best selling on the iPad and they easily could have charged five bucks a pop for the iPhone versions.

For those who haven’t had a chance to discover these apps yet, Keynote is the iWork equivalent of Powerpoint for slide presentations; Numbers is a spreadsheet app, and Pages is the word processor in the suite. All three can import and export in MS office compatible formats and print via the wireless AirPrint functionality in iOS.

I’ve used all three apps on the iPad and they are all stellar apps. Keynote in particular is a spectacularly great app, one of the very best I’ve seen for the iPad. I have created several 50-slide presentations entirely on the iPad thanks to the sheer brilliance of the Keynote UI.

I have a feeling these apps may always be a little better suited to the iPad for creation and heavy-duty editing work, but it’s exciting to see them come to the iPhone – especially as universal apps.

I haven’t been able to see these properly on the iPhone App Store as yet, but they all show up properly as universal apps in iTunes on the desktop – and I’m sure they’ll be in the iPhone App Store soon. Here are links for them:
