
Fortune points out that Apple’s mythical data center located outside of Maiden, North Carolina can now been seen in Google Maps and Google Earth.
The only reason this is particularly newsworthy, is that it shows that the data center, online, as recently as yesterday’s iCloud announcement. So, in short, it appears that the center is now online.
Now, speculation has been flung around that Apple had been working with Google to keep images of the facility off of Google Maps, and away from the public eye. This was difficult to tell, due to the infrequency in which Google updates rural map tiles. Also, the facility sits on the boundary between two map tiles, some of which were not being updated regularly, fueling rumors.
More interesting yet, is that an area to the southeast is cleared- right where Apple is rumored to be building another facility on that property, doubling the size of the data center. Remember, Apple also paid a couple $1.7 million for their property in the area.
