Report Claims that Apple will Offer Free Level of iCloud Service, Agressive Pricing

Screen shot 2011-06-01 at 11.59.13 AM.pngAppleInsider is reporting that Apple will offer a free, basic level of their forthcoming iCloud service, which will reportedly be free for customers who upgrade to Mac OS X Lion when it comes available. That said, it’s not known what will be included in this basic level of service.

One thing they do known however, is that the basic, free level service will not feature the much-rumored music-streaming feature. Apple has had to negotiate deals with the music labels, at a significant cost, and Apple will likely have to charge for the music-streaming to recoup the cost.

A flakier source in the report claims that Mac OS X Lion will cost relatively little, in an effort to draw more users to upgrade. This lower price may be due to the fact that Apple is hoping to push the upgrade out mainly through the Mac App Store.

Remember, this would fall in line with the pricing that Apple put in place with the Snow Leopard release in 2009, which was priced at $29. This is speculation on my part, but I would guess that the Lion upgrade will be in that price range.

9to5Mac is also reporting that Apple may be offering educational discounts for the iCloud service. This falls right in line with recent rumors that Apple will be announcing their annual Back-to-school promotion.
