To date, Apple has sold over 200 million iOS devices, which comprise some 44% of mobile market. Over 14 billion apps have been downloaded for the platform to date, and over $2.5 billion paid out to developers.
Here are the 10 new features shown off today at the WWDC 2011 keynote:
Notification Center- Modal alerts are annoying. The new system, which is accessed by swiping downward on the screen, shows the user in aggregate, all of the notifications. It’s unobtrusive if you’re playing games, and can even be seen on the lock screen as well.

Newsstand- Integrated right into the home screen, newspapers’ users subscribe to are delivered right to their device. Many publishers are on board.
Twitter- Twitter is integrated into iOS 5. You can use your credentials, sign into twitter in the systems preferences app, and any application can (optionally) now access this information. You can now send photos, articles from Safari, and Maps locations to Twitter, right from the OS.

Safari- Apple is bringing the Reader feature included on the desktop version of Safari, to iOS for a tidier reading experience. You can now also email the content, and not just the link to an article. Reading List- save content for later reading, like Instagram. Also, tabbed browsing.
Reminders- Syncs across all iOS devices, and iCal. It’s essentially a check list for getting things done.
Camera- Now a camera button on the lock screen. Exposer adjustment, and editing right on the device.

Mail- Rich text formatting, search entire content of messages, draggable addresses flagging. Built in dictionary for entire OS. Keyboard now splits if you move it upward with your thumbs- more thumb friendly typing.

PC Free- Over the air software updates. When you take an iOS device out of the box, it no longer asks to be connected to a computer, but rather states “Welcome”. Updates are only delta, so you only download what has changed. You can also sync your iTunes library wirelessly as well.
Game Center- Can now see the scores of your friends’ friends, friend recommendations and game recommendations.

iMessage: New messaging service between all iOS devices, not just iPhones. Can now send text messages, photos, videos, contacts, and even do group messaging to all iOS devices. Cross device means you can pick it up on one device, and continue the conversation on another. Will work over WiFi and 3G.
iOS 5 will be available as a free update to all recent iOS device customers this fall. Developers get an SDK seed today.
