Just as expected (due to numerous rumors / leaks on this), it was announced today that Twitter will be deeply integrated into iOS 5 when it is released this Fall.
What this means is that it will be much easier to tweet from all over the place on a device running iOS 5. It will offer single sign-on via the Settings app and the ability to tweet directly from many of the built-in apps on iOS devices.
Among the apps that you’ll be able to tweet directly from are Photos, Safari, Maps, Camera, and YouTube – and I imagine many 3rd party apps may follow suit if the Apple APIs allow them to.
The Twitter integration also extends to the built-in Contacts app:
Want to mention or @reply to a friend? Contacts applies your friends’ Twitter usernames and profile pictures. So you can start typing a name and iOS 5 does the rest. You can even add a location to any tweet, no matter which app you’re tweeting from.
I’ve been a big Twitter fan for years now, and use it just as much on my iOS devices as on the desktop – so I’m very happy to see this upcoming integration into the OS.
What do you all think of this new feature of iOS 5? Will it hurt 3rd party Twitter apps / change the way you use Twitter on your iDevices?
