Apple Finally Pulls DUI Checkpoint Apps From the App Store

Apple has changed the language in the App Store Review Guidelines, and are now banning DUI checkpoint apps from the App Store. Apple likely did this in response to pressure from U.S. Senators asking for their removal. The applications in question provide a database of (already publicly listed) DUI checkpoint, which are updated in real time.

Here’s the relevant, new language in the Review Guidelines:

Apps which contain DUI checkpoints that are not published by law enforcement agencies, or encourage and enable drunk driving, will be rejected.

As noted, some law enforcement agencies publish the DUI checkpoints ahead of time. The biggest thing these apps would do, that was questionable, were list speed traps, speed cameras, accidents, and the like. The new guidelines mention none of these things, just the DUI checkpoints.
