Apple Largest Semiconductor Buyer in 2010

IHS iSuppli has released a research note wherein they claim Apple was the world’s largest semiconductor buyer in regards to original equipment manufacturers for 2010. Apple spent some $17.5 billion, compared to HP and Samsung who “only” spent about $15 billion. Apple was in third place 2009, and sixth the year prior.

They expect Apple’s lead to grow over HP in 2011 to be $7.5 billion, compared to this year’s $2.3 billion lead. With a $7.5 billion lead, Apple would be spending $22 billion in semiconductors.

The report also points out that 61% of Apple’s spending in 2010 was for wireless products, whereas HP’s 81% were spend in traditional computer products. Apple is putting their money in expanding markets such as mobile phones, which is widening their lead.
