In the past, Apple has offered an “Up-to-Date” program, wherein if they, for instance, announce a new version of Mac OS X, and if you bought a Mac in the time period between the announcement, and when the software actually ships, you get the software for “free”. By “free” you would have to spend $9.95 to have Apple ship you an install DVD.
This seems to no longer be the case. In Apple’s Lion press release, it was found that the up-to-date program will now, with the help of the Mac App Store, actually be free. For a Mac to qualify for this, it has to have been purchased between June 6th, the day of the announcement, until the day Lion officially ships. After that, customers have 30 days to request an upgrade.
