9to5Mac is reporting with a screenshot of iOS 5 showing a dialog box that points to FaceTime working over 3G cellular networks.

Of course, since FaceTime was introduced last year, it has only been functional over Wi-Fi, which appears to be an artificial limitation. For the service to work over 3G, it would likely be up to individual carriers to offer compatibility with 3G service.

Just as was suggested yesterday, regarding the reasoning Apple left music streaming out of the iCloud service, is the fact that FaceTime takes up a lot of data, something the cellular carriers may or may not be able to handle. We’ll see what happens when iOS 5 is released this fall.
