Apple has changed the language for their App Store review guidelines with regards to in-app subscriptions in the store. Formerly, the requirements were that a subscription offer on the app that must be “same price or less than it is offered outside the app”. The new guidelines are stripped of this requirement, and external offers no longer have to be offered in apps, as required before the change.
So now content providers can offer in-app subscriptions at any price they see fit, and they no longer have to offer an in-app subscription if they offer a subscription outside of the app.
Also, the new language states that apps can now play content “subscribed to our purchased outside of the app”, so long as the app doesn’t link to that outside source.
Furthermore, existing subscription services like Netflix can continue on their way without changing a thing – no in-app purchases. Content providers can make up any price they want now, which means that these content providers can mark up a premium on in-app subscriptions to cover Apple’s 30% cut.
Compare all of this to Apple’s stance when they rolled out in-app subscriptions in Feburary, and you see that Apple has relaxed their rules significantly. No more price matching. No more forced, mirrored offers. Sell what you want, as you want.
